Fishbourne Roman Palace & Gardens

ree

Welcome back to Rarars Adventures, I hope we are all well.

This month we have been out and about visiting Fishbourne Roman Palace & Gardens.

I'll leave a link at the end so that you can pop over to youtube and watch the film.

Fishbourne Roman Palace is near Chichester.

Before I carry on, I thought I would share a little about Fishbourne Roman Palace, which I have quoted from their website to give you the right information.

"Our Charitable aim is to enable people to enjoy, learn about and have access to the heritage of Sussex.

Sussex Archaeological Society is a registered charity that opens historic houses and gardens to the public, curates six fully accredited museums, and undertakes and encourages research through our libraries, archive collections, and small research grants.

We rely upon income from admissions, donations, and membership to care for 10 Listed buildings, six Scheduled Monuments, and a Registered Park and garden.

We do not receive any government funding. Help preserve your local heritage by becoming a member, donating, volunteering, or visiting our sites.

We host a finds identification service and offer a variety of walks, talks, and conferences on the archaeology and history of Sussex.

We hold archaeology collections for the counties of East and West Sussex, including the award-winning collections Discovery Center at Fishbourne Roman Palace in partnership with the novum.”

When you arrive at the entrance they do carer free entry, also I wanted to say if you have children with you, or adults there are a couple of activity sheets you can pick up to take around with you where you spot different things out and have to mark off, I wanted to share this with you as we saw some children there doing the activity and they looked as if they were enjoying themselves.

The parking is accessible for school trips people who drive a bus or van who carry wheelchairs or mobility scooters, so don't forget to bring your blue badge as there are disabled parking bays.

They also have disabled toilets, which you will need a RADAR key for, or ask a member of staff for a key if you don't have one. (I have done a post on the RADAR key if you are interested in getting one or how they work I'll leave the link here.)

You are allowed to bring assistance dogs throughout your whole visit.

they also have two wheelchairs that they can loan out while you visit but I would strongly suggest booking them in advance to guarantee you have one for your visit.

There is also an app you can download to listen to information as you walk around.

there are also ramps though out most of your visit but there are a couple of places that do have stairs so please bear this in mind, in the gardens, there is some shingle which is something to be aware of if you are pushing someone in a wheelchair or you are driving a power chair or mobility scooter but they have thinned out one side to make it more assessable, which they will point out to you as you make your way into the gardens. I was in my mobility scooter on this visit and I have to say we didn't have any trouble.

(I will be leaving some pictures at the end so you will be able to see what I'm talking about.)

They have a lovely little cafe there, because of COVID they are only offering take-away service drinks and snacks but when the situations changes they will be offering lunches again and you will be able to eat indoors, so please keep checking their website for updates.

In the Cafe, they offer wheat and gluten-free food, vegan, and vegetarian. if you are unsure of any of the food please ask a member of staff and they will help you.

Tours and Talks

(At this current time they are not running their Tours and Talks please check the website to see when this is back on.)

Quoted from the website to give you the right information.

"Discover the unique story of the largest Roman home in Britain and explore Britain's greatest collection of Roman mosaics, as they were laid 2,000 years ago.

During your visit, why not join one of our guided tours?

There are a number of half-hour guided tours throughout the day. Some tours cover the mosaics and archaeological remains, while others focus on what happens behind the scenes. in fine weather, we also offer tours of the garden. Tour times can vary, so do phone us on the day on 01243 785859 if you want to be sure of joining a guided tour as part of your visit.

During every visit, you can also see the Palace reconstructed to its former glory in our introductory film and follow in the footsteps of our Roman ancestors as you wander around Britain's first garden, the lavish centerpiece of the Place. There is also a chance to glimpse behind the scenes of the museum and see how conservators and curators care for the many treasures from the site."
